Tony Tay received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2017 for his work with Willing Hearts which he founded in 2003. Willing Hearts has a soup kitchen and 300 volunteers, cooking and distributing some 6,500 meals a day for the poor and needy in Singapore, seven days a week. Michael Phoon will discourse with this man with a big heart on why and how he put his Catholic faith into action, and the trials and tribulations along the way.

There is a resurgence of ethics in corporations. Much of it is a response to corporate scandals and the consequent regulations. At the same time, there is a new capitalism emerging, one driven by values and not just value, and focused on stakeholders and not just shareholders. Willie Cheng, a veteran board director, will discuss the trends and how moral capitalism is manifesting in CSR 2.0, social enterprises, inclusive businesses and impact investing.

SPEAKER’S BIOGRAPHIES

9.30 AM

“Pastoral Reflection: Living the Challenges of God's Will as a Working Catholic”

Speaker: Monsignor Philip Heng SJ, Vicar General Administration, Ecumenism and Inter-religious Relations

Monsignor Philip Heng is Vicar General to the Catholic Archbishop of Singapore, the Most Reverend William Goh since May 2013. As Vicar General, his portfolio includes administration, finance, inter-religious relations, and ecumenical relations between Catholic and Protestant Christians. He is also Rector of the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd and St Joseph’s Church (Victoria Street). Before his appointment as Rector of the Cathedral and St Joseph’s Church, Monsignor Heng was Parish Priest of St Ignatius Church for six and a half years until September 2015. Prior to that, he was Director of Novices of the Jesuits of Malaysia-Singapore for 12.5 years. He completed his Masters and Licentiate in Theology at the Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines as part of his training to become a priest, from 1985 to 1995. He is also a graduate student of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Mr Lim was appointed Chairman of Temasek Holdings on 1 August 2013, after having served as its Director since 1 June 2012.

Mr Lim is also the Chairman of NTUC Enterprise Co-operative Ltd and Deputy Chairman of Singapore Labour Foundation. He was previously a Cabinet Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office. Mr Lim’s career spans the private and public sectors, having led Singapore’s National Trade Union Congress, and having served as a Member of Parliament (1980 to 2011) and Cabinet Minister for Trade and Industry. Before entering the public sector, Mr Lim spent a decade at NOL (Neptune Orient Lines).

Mr Lim holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Naval Architecture from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK.

Ms Vivienne Lim-Kwek is a lawyer by profession and Founding Director of Genesis Law Corporation. She also serves as Independent Director of Far East Hospitality Asset Management and Far East Hospitality Trust Management.

She is also Chairperson of CHIJ Board of Management overseeing the management of all 11 Convent of Holy Infant Jesus Schools in Singapore. She has served on the board of various Catholic organisations including as Vice-President of Catholic Business Network and as Deputy Chairperson of Caritas Humanitarian Aid and Relief Initiative Singapore (CHARIS). She is a mother of 4 and a parishioner of St Mary of the Angels Church.

Panellist: Mr Ooi Boon Hoe
CEO, Jurong Port Pte Ltd

Mr Ooi Boon Hoe joined Jurong Port as Chief Executive Officer on 21 August 2014. Boon Hoe has more than 20 years’ experience in both the public and private sectors. He started his career with the Republic of Singapore Navy and Ministry of Defence. In the private sector, Boon Hoe worked in DBS Bank as a corporate finance professional before joining Portek International in 2002. At Portek, Boon Hoe held various key positions including: Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer.

Boon Hoe graduated with a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours, Economics) from the University of London. He attended the College Interarmee De Defense, Paris, France; and also obtained a 1st Class Pass from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, UK. He was a recipient of the Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Training Award, and a Singapore Armed Forces Merit Scholarship.

Panellist: Mr S Devendran
CEO, Sree Narayana Mission

Mr S Devendran is CEO of Sree Narayana Mission (an IPC charity) that runs a range of services in the eldercare sector and community programmes catering to the less privileged regardless of race, language and religion. He also serves on several boards and committees including the Board of Visitors (Singapore Prison Service), Home Detention Advisory Committee 3 (Singapore Prison Service), Greenwood Primary School and the Singapore Indian Association.

He is a lector at Church of Christ The King and serves as a warden in Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Panellist: Mr Dylan Ng
CEO & Co-Founder, Lionsbot International Pte Ltd
CEO & Co-Founder, SuperSteam Asia Pacific Pte Ltd

Dylan is a graduate of Nanyang Technological University. Together with his wife Michelle, they built up SuperSteam from scratch to become Singapore’s leading professional cleaning equipment and chemicals supplier with a dominant market share in indoor machines, chemicals and consumables.

They also co-founded Lionsbot International with Associate Professor Mohan Rajan Elara. Lionsbot uses ground-breaking professional cleaning robots that are engineered and manufactured in Singapore.

Dylan is a sought after international speaker on professional cleaning technology and sales. He won the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award in 1994 and currently serves on the governing council of Workforce Advancement Federation Ltd.

Panellist: Mr Pius Lee
Board Member, Caritas Singapore

Pius is a Principal Research Engineer at a local university and is passionate about harnessing transformative technologies for social impact. His current work involves using Internet of Things’ technology to support active ageing-in-place for the elderly living alone at home.

He serves the Church in various ministries viz., facilitating faith formation of children; promoting Carmelite Spirituality; championing Catholic Social Teachings; assisting with the technological needs of several church organisations; and journeying with a young adult community in their faith formation. His social mission work revolves around befriending homeless persons, journeying with children from low-income families, and partnering the poor with Caritas Singapore, the social mission arm of the Catholic Church in Singapore.

“In Conversation with Tony Tay, Founder, Willing Hearts”

Mr Tony Tay
Founder, Willing Hearts
Recipient of Ramon Magsaysay Award 2017

In 2003, Mr Tay began serving the needy by providing meals from his home, continuing the legacy of his late mother. Willing Hearts was registered in 2005. Since then, a typical work day begins at 5.30 am at the soup kitchen where he works tirelessly to prepare food and supervise the distribution of about 6,500 meals per day. Afternoons are spent meeting with corporate donors, educational institutions, government officials, media and food suppliers. He is often invited by corporations and educational institutions to talk about his experiences in running Willing Hearts. He takes each day's challenges in stride, confident that "With God on our side", all obstacles can be overcome.

In 2017, Mr Tay was a recipient of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, becoming one of only three Singaporean awardees to date.

Married to Mary, he has three grown-up children each with successful careers, and is blessed with 9 grandchildren.

Executive Director, Singapore Shipping Association

Michael Phoon is Executive Director of the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) which champions Singapore’s maritime interests by engaging key stakeholders through special interest working groups and sub-committees to harmonise between the shipping community and Government regulators and agencies. He is also Secretary-General for the Federation of ASEAN Shipowners’ Association (FASA). He was appointed by the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) as Deputy Chairman for the National Maritime Safety at Sea Council and also sits on the Maritime Industry Advisory Committee of Singapore Maritime Academy and the National Technological University of Singapore. Michael is also an appointed Fellow of the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

Prior to joining SSA, Michael had over 25 years of international work experience in the IT industry spanning USA, Europe and Asia. He is also a Certified Master Coach.

Speaker: Mr Willie Cheng
Chairman, Catholic Foundation

Willie Cheng is a former managing partner of Accenture. He is currently on the boards of several commercial and non-profit organisations. He is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Singapore Institute of Directors.

He is Chairman of Catholic Foundation; council member of the Archdiocesan Land & Properties Singapore and the Church Governance & Structure Committee; and advisor to CBN and CHARIS. He and his wife are a presenting couple with the Marriage Preparation Course.

He has written extensively on corporate governance and the non-profit sector. His books include Doing Good Well, Doing Good Great, and The World That Changes The World.

“Discovering the Will of God for Me in the Marketplace: Perspectives from Youths”

Speaker: Mr Mark Tang

Mark volunteers at Caritas as Chairperson of Caritas Young Adults and also serves on the Board of Caritas Singapore.

He is a parishioner of Church of St Francis Xavier and a member of the Leaven of God community.

Mark is also the Co-Founder of ParablesGifts, an online Catholic gift e-commerce shop. ParablesGifts is the result of a labour of love by a community of craftsmen who use their talents to create life-giving and meaningful gifts inspired through prayer.


Speaker: Ms Audrey Tan
Co-Founder, Circles of Angels
Co-Founder, Playmoolah, Edmund Hillary Fellow

Audrey is a social entrepreneur whose technology journey began in 2009 during her study stint in Silicon Valley with the NUS Overseas College Program. She co-founded PlayMoolah, a social enterprise that educates children, parents and young adults on money matters with more than 70,000 users globally.

She also co-founded Angels of Impact to enable female social entrepreneurs to access markets and funding. She also co-authored a book titled: “Sustainable Impact: How Women Are Key To Ending Poverty”. In 2017, Audrey was named an Edmund Hillary Fellow (which recognises individuals contributing to the global impact space). A champion of the UN Sustainability Development goal of No Poverty, her interest in supporting people & technology led to the formation of Circles of Angels (COA) - to make impact funding accessible to purpose-led businesses. COA works closely with development partners Atix Labs in Argentina and UNICEF.

Audrey and her husband Gerald are active members of Vocare, a young adults’ vocation discernment community in Nativity BVM Church.


Host: Mr Bernard Lim
DJ, Producer & Presenter, MONEY FM 89.3

Bernard is a popular and well known TV/radio media personality who currently hosts MONEY FM 89.3.

He began his radio stint in the 1990s and hosted Channel 5’s “Wheel of Fortune” on TV. He was also the live TV commentator for National Day Parades in the 2000s before taking on management roles as VP for Radio Programming; CEO Lifebrandz Ltd (SGX listed); and MD for Mediacorp TV in 2013.

In 2017, he was Head of Corporate Communications for a real estate developer in Cambodia before returning to Singapore in 2018 to join SPH’s radio station MONEY FM 89.3.

John has 26 years of management consulting experience in a diverse range of industries across Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa. He has been on assignments in South Africa since August 2008.

John is focused on growth and value creation for clients. He has an MBA (Distinction) from Maastricht School of Management, Netherlands and a BBA from NUS.

He has worked overseas in ASEAN, Australia, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Mauritius, Myanmar, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Taiwan and South Africa.

Board Member, Catholic Foundation

Andrew Sng has been involved with the ministries of several religious congregations in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Greater China. As an “enabler” he brings his experience and expertise to help these organisations to be relevant while remaining faithful to their charism and calling in serving the poor and marginalised in society. He was a key member of the core group that developed Assumption Pathway School (APS) where he currently serves as Vice Chairman of the School Management Committee. Andrew is also a Board Member of the Catholic Foundation.

Professionally, Andrew is the Senior Partner (Asia) and Managing Director of Decision Processes International Asia (DPI). DPI is an international network of consulting and training firms that help people and organisations improve the quality of their strategic and operational decisions.


Panellist: Dr John Hui
Deputy Chairman, Archdiocesan Commission for the
Family

John graduated from the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and is presently a family physician in private practice. He obtained his certificate as a Natural Family Planning (NFP) consultant in 2005, having completed a course in Naprotechnology at the Pope Paul VI Institute in Omaha, USA. In 2011 he obtained a Graduate Diploma in Bioethics from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in Melbourne, Australia. He recently wrote a book on Sexuality Education for Catholic parents.

John is married to his devoted wife, Geraldine. They have 4 children and 1 grandchild (so far) and are presenters with the Marriage Preparation Course. He also serves on the board of the Archdiocesan Commission for the Family and the Bioethics Committee of the Catholic Medical Guild.


Panellist: Sr Wendy Ooi, FSP
Daughters of St Paul
Board Member, Caritas Singapore

Sr Wendy Ooi, FSP is a member of the Daughters of St Paul, a
missionary religious congregation whose mission is evangelisation
with the media. Popularly known as a “media nun”, Sr Wendy is
passionate about “using the most modern means of communication
to share the Gospel to all people."

Sr Wendy spent four and a half years in Nairobi, Kenya to do
mission work where she helped to develop the audio-visual sector.
She is also the author of a book titled “Notes from
Kenya: A Missionary’s Experience” which documents her life and
experiences as a modern-day missionary serving the Church. A former broadcaster (with the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation) before she joined the convent, Sr Wendy occasionally gives talks on Media Literacy and Media Spirituality. She also serves as a board member with Caritas Singapore.


Panellist: Ms Peggy Yee
President, Catholic Lawyers’ Guild

Peggy Sarah Yee May Kuen runs her own law practice and has been in active legal practice for over 30 years. Peggy is proud to be Catholic and uses the gifts she has been blessed with to serve the Church.

As President of Catholic Lawyers Guild, she advocates the need for Catholic lawyers to live out their faith and make a difference in their profession. Peggy is passionate about special needs causes and advocates for the voiceless through her role as VP of the Disabled Peoples Association. Peggy is also a Board Member of Caritas Singapore and the Charities Council and a long serving Lector and Catechist.

Peggy is the mother of three children (aged 12 to 20) and firmly believes that her vocation as a Catholic wife, mother and daughter complements and guides her professional life.


Panellist: Mr Gerald Lee
Office for Young People, Archdiocese of Singapore

Gerald is a full-time staff at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore’s Office for Young People. He is particularly interested in helping people encounter the love and mercy of Jesus Christ, and subsequently to discover the joy of living their lives in commitment to Him.

Prior to working for the Church, Gerald spent four years working in a consulting company specialising in M&A and strategy consulting.

H.E. Marek Zalewski,
Apostolic Nuncio to Singapore

H.E. Marek Zalewski was born in 1963 in Augustów, Poland. After two years studying Philosophy at the Major Seminary in Łomża, Poland (1983-1985), he spent four years doing Theology at the Metropolitan Seminary in Florence (1985-1989), Italy, completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology. On 27 May 1989 he was ordained to the Priesthood at St. Michael Archangel’s Cathedral in Łomża, Poland.

Msgr. Zalewski was pastorally active as assistant priest at St. Maria’s Parish in the Archdiocese of Florence from 1989 to 1991. In 1991, he started Doctorate in Canon Law studies at Pontificia Università Gregoriana (Gregorian University), Rome. He also pursued language courses and the internal program of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and is fluent in Italian, English and French.

Upon entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See in July 1995, he was posted to: Central African Republic (1995-1998); United Nations, New York (1998-2001); Great Britain (2001-2004); Germany (2004-2008); Thailand (2008-2011); Singapore (2011-2012); Malaysia (2012-2014). On 25 March 2014 His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Msgr. Zalewski Titular Archbishop of Africa (Tunisia) and Apostolic Nuncio to Zimbabwe. On 21 May 2018 His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Zalewski Apostolic Nuncio to Singapore and Non-Resident Pontifical Representative for Vietnam.

Rev Father Colin Tan, SJ served on the Board of Caritas Singapore for two terms as well as the Spiritual Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). He was also Chaplain of the Catholic Medical Guild. He also finished his term as the Regional Superior of the Jesuits of Malaysia-Singapore Region.

He has been serving on the CHARIS Board for two terms and is currently the Spiritual Director of Catholic Business Network (CBN) and the Parish Priest of St Ignatius Church.

Mr Brian Lee
Founder & Principal Trainer, Be The Voice Academy

Brian is a communication and presentation skills expert with a proven track record of hosting broadcast media programmes. The founder of Be The Voice Academy, he is passionate about mentoring individuals to harness their voice to communicate information and present ideas.

Voice trained at the celebrated London School of English, Brian began his career in 1982 by emceeing and disc jockeying at the tender age of 17.

Over the past 3 decades, Brian was involved in many RSAF air shows and events, both locally and internationally. He scripted and commentated for the RSAF’s elite aerobatics team, The Black Knights, at the inaugural Singapore Air Show in 2008, and at the National Day Parade 2008.

Brian is also an Adjunct Lecturer for HEC Paris as well as Singapore Management University.
